Our guest had many broken down silver fillings that were failing and had decay growing underneath them.  These teeth had also formed cracks due to the older dental work.  Our guest wanted to update her old metal fillings with newer materials that did not have any metal.

Dr. Patel replaced the old silver fillings with bonded tooth colored fillings and porcelain onlays that are durable, metal free and look natural.

What are dental crowns?
Dental crowns are also known as caps. They're a permanently bonded cover for a tooth that is decayed, broken, chipped, cracked or in danger of cracking. They look and function the same way as natural teeth, and strengthen and protect the tooth they cover.

Dental crowns can be made of porcelain, gold, or a porcelain and metal mix.

The procedure
This is a two-appointment procedure. A local anesthetic is used, and if you prefer, Dr. Patel can offer you some sedation to relax you.

First appointment

  • Austin cosmetic dentist, Dr. Patel will use a hand piece to reshape your natural tooth enough to make room for the porcelain crown.
  • An impression will be taken of the tooth and sent to a lab, where the porcelain crowns will be manufactured.
  • You will be given a temporary crown to wear for two weeks, while your permanent porcelain dental crown is being made.

Second appointment

  • The Austin cosmetic dentist will make sure the dental crown is the right size, shape and color before permanently attaching it.
  • When he's satisfied with it, he'll attach it permanently. It will be positioned flush with your gum line.

Caring for your dental crown
After the porcelain crown procedure is done at our dental office, it is home for care of your new dental crown. Keep the porcelain dental crown clean with regular flossing and brushing, just as you do with your natural teeth. It will look and feel exactly like a natural tooth and will preserve the natural tooth underneath it for many years as you give it good care.
