For health. For beauty. For you.
TMJ stands for temporo-mandibular joint syndrome. Neuromuscular dentists work with the facial muscles, jaws, as well as the teeth. Like Dr. Tejas Patel of the Center of Cosmetic & General Dentistry in Austin, Texas, they are trained to understand the optimal position of the jaw and how to realign it in order to relieve the symptoms associated with TMJ.
TMJ symptoms
TMJ is a collection of symptoms that result from the malocclusion or misalignment of your jaws. There are some large nerves in the area of the temple, where the upper and lower jawbones join. When the lower jaw meets incorrectly with the upper jaw, the muscles attached to them become strained, and the nerves become irritated, which may result in:
- Pain throughout the face
- Headaches
- Sore teeth
- Numbness or tingling in the arms
- Popping in the jaw
- Chipped or broken teeth
- Pain in the neck and shoulders
If you or someone in your family has had any of the symptoms of TMJ for a significant length of time, you should schedule an evaluation with a dentist trained in neuromuscular dentistry like Dr. Patel.
TMJ treatment
Dr. Patel will take your complete dental history and then conduct a thorough exam to determine if you have TMJ symptoms. He will devise a treatment plan of therapies to relieve stress on the joints, alleviate muscle spasms and reposition the jaw.
Treatment may include:
- Physical therapy
- Electrical stimulation
- An appliance to be worn in the mouth to help realign the jaw
Once the pain has been alleviated, Dr. Patel will come up with treatment options designed to permanently stabilize the jaw in the correct position.
This may involve a combination of therapies including:
- Coronoplasty (reshaping of the tooth enamel)
- Orthodontics
- Crowns or bridges
- An appliance to be worn in the mouth to help realign the jaw
